Righteousness Ancestral Hall

Situated next to Kam Fa Temple, a torn-out small brick hall has a 150 years history. The hall's function was similar to what we now called "hospice care" or "palliative care". There were three rooms, one for the dying patient, one for the helpless patient and one for the caretaker. An icon of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva was worshipped in the hall and believed to bless the sick and dying patients.

The hall also functioned as the funeral home for the poor residents who died penniless. Neighbors would take care the arrangement for the dead.

In a time the government provided no welfare, the island residents organized themselves to help each others and the people in need, revolving conflicts and organizing festivities. All were volunteers. The spirits of community were very strong. Regardless in time of festivities or disasters, the neighbors would try their best to help in any way they can.
